Why tuners value ethanol

Ethanol's charge-cooling effect and knock resistance can support more boost, compression or ignition advance when the combination is suitable. That does not mean every engine automatically gains power. The result still depends on airflow, turbo efficiency, combustion quality and the limits of the hardware.

Fuel volume changes the hardware equation

An ethanol blend requires more fuel volume for the same air mass than gasoline. Pump capacity, injector headroom, line size, pressure control and electrical supply must be checked at the target load. A tune that is safe at moderate boost can become fuel-limited when the requested airflow rises.

Tune for the fuel that is actually in the tank

Pump-labelled E85 does not guarantee identical ethanol content every fill. A flex-fuel sensor and calibrated blending strategy let the ECU adjust fueling, cold start, boost and ignition for measured content. Without that strategy, the calibration should be conservative enough for the expected variation.
